![]() Consider adding Barton Fink to these lists for a horror film that attacks the genre in a completely unique way than so many of the classics. Every October, film lovers make lists of horror movies to watch in the lead-up to Halloween. Instead of reacting to external forces, you are thinking about internal ones, which may not make you realize just how scared you actually are. Extreme anxiety and stress just propel you further into your own mind. Its dread does not manifest itself in the same way as waiting in line for a roller coaster does, where you are excited by how scared you will be. ![]() While Barton Fink is an enormously enjoyable film, the horror of Barton Fink comes from a completely different place than most horror films. This year's Shiva Baby from writer-director Emma Seligman traffics in a similar blending of the paralyzing terror of an uncomfortable situation mixed with using humor to try and get yourself out of it. What the Minnesota-born brothers understand is anxiety and comedy need to coexist with one another, otherwise there would be no air for an anxious person to breathe. The Coen Brothers rarely make a film that squarely fits into one neat category, hence why the term "Coenesque" was coined. Using that baseline as a central source for its psychological terror makes complete sense, and placing all these unknown, unexplainable elements on top of it makes for an armrest clenching experience.īeing a film from Joel and Ethan Coen, Barton Fink contains its fair share of absurd humor and quirky characters, from the boisterous studio head (an Academy Award-nominated Michael Lerner) to the alcoholic novelist ( John Mahoney). Many people thrive off conquering that challenge, and some crumble under the pressure, unhealthily retreating into the recesses of their own minds. This very article was written under a deadline, and its author was more than anxious about meeting that deadline. Whether you are in seventh grade writing a book report or a grown adult with a work project, we all relate to the stresses of meeting a deadline. Of course, the most elemental reason for Barton's anxiety is writer's block coupled with a deadline. These developments only add to the weight Barton places on his shoulders. Could it be the murdered woman's head? Could it be an unrelated person's head? Or is it something innocuous? We never know. Similarly, Charlie bestows Barton with a package to hang onto for a little while. ![]() We never learn who killed her or why, although there are implications the killer is Charlie. One morning, Barton awakes after a night with his idol's wife ( Judy Davis) with her murdered in bed beside him. Horror movies are no stranger to the unknown, be it not knowing why your child is acting in psychopathic ways or simply what lurks behind a corner, yet most of the time, these questions do get answered. Most disconcerting of all is we never really know why all of this happens, and the Coen Brothers use that unknown throughout the film to aid in the anxiety. All of those scenes and moments of Barton in his room sweating, messing with his wallpaper, and attempting to keep everything together lead to everything crashing down as the fire consumes all. You have the terror of someone handcuffed to a hotel bed as a man charges down the hallway with a shotgun after two detectives, screaming, "I'll show you the life of the mind!" Though it is the only scene in the film this outrageous in its outward horror, the only reason the scene is effective as it is comes from it being that inevitable ripping off of the bandage seeded throughout the film's running time. ![]() The final, fiery set piece of Barton Fink most explicitly makes the case for it as a horror film. ![]() Each subsequent day he spends in the Hotel Earle feels more and more like he has stepped into an evil place, culminating with it set aflame by either Charlie or maybe an otherworldly force. Barton and Charlie appear to be the only people staying in the hotel, with just the old elevator operator and the bellhop Chet ( Steve Buscemi) there as employees. You feel as though you can smell the old, hot glue dripping down the walls. The wallpaper constantly peels as if it is way trying to escape being a part of this place itself. His room acts as a sweatbox where he wakes up every morning with mosquito bites. Wanting to stay away from the glitz and glamor of Hollywood, the Hotel Earle is dusty, sweaty, and falling apart. RELATED: Why the Coen Brothers Are Our Most American Filmmakersīarton's anxieties manifest themselves most distinctly in his place of residence, the Hotel Earle. ![]() ![]() ![]() For details, questions or concerns regarding your loan please contact your lender directly. The following sections describe the significant progress made towards the key priorities which are critical to achieving the targets and objectives set out in the Lake Simcoe Protection Plan, such as improving water quality and restoring aquatic life. These results are very encouraging, but there is more work to be done. This includes a 50 per cent reduction in phosphorus from sewage treatment plants entering the watershed since 2009, decreased amounts of algae, and successful reproduction of cold-water fish such as lake trout, although at lower levels than historically. This report marks a significant milestone for Lake Simcoe: it showcases actions implemented under the Lake Simcoe Protection Plan in the last five years, showing progress in key areas of concern. The restoration of Lake Simcoe and its watershed was also a key commitment in our government's Made-in-Ontario Environment Plan, as part of a broader effort to protect water resources in the province. Together, the act and plan outline actions and targets for environmental improvements in Lake Simcoe. This collaboration resulted in the establishment of the Lake Simcoe Protection Act in 2008, the first watershed-specific legislation in Canada, followed by the release in 2009 of the Lake Simcoe Protection Plan, Ontario's first watershed protection plan. Over the years, it has become clear that human activities like urban development, agriculture and recreation have impacted the lake's health, and that's why organizations, community groups, local advocates, and all levels of government have come together to restore and protect this crucial watershed. People from the Lake Simcoe region know this well. Clean water is vital to the health of our environment and communities across Ontario. ![]() ![]() ![]() RV furnace – Uses a lot of electricity, uses propane inefficiently, brings fresh air into the rig (because it’s vented). The basic difference between an RV furnace and a vent-free propane heater is this: It was really cold, but it was so beautiful we didn’t mind!! One solution for that, of course, is to tape over the vent on the outside of the rig and not use the microwave for the duration of the cold snap (we haven’t done that, however). The microwave vent is another drafty spot, and if the wind is howling outside and blowing directly on that wall of the RV, it blows right into the kitchen through the vent holes on the top of the microwave. But when it is a blustery18 degrees outside and we are trying to heat the rig to 65 degrees inside, the breeze by those windows is a shock. You don’t notice it so much when it is 70 degrees both outside and inside with no wind blowing. Our top quality, four season fifth wheel trailer is downright drafty inside, with a definite breeze that can, at times, flutter a tissue by the “escape” windows. ![]() RV windows don’t seal all that well either. Some folks like to have thermopane (dual pane) RV windows, but if moisture gets between the two panes, which can happen more easily in an RV that rattles down the road all the time than in a house that stands still on its foundation, the moisture is likely to remain there permanently, no matter what the weather does outside or how many years go by. The metal window frames are extremely cold to the touch when temps outside are in the 20’s, and all that metal around our many windows conducts the cold right into the rig. In reality, RVs are most comfortable in temperatures that stay above freezing.Įven though high end RVs are marketed as being “four season” coaches, boasting high R-factors in the walls, ceiling and floor, you just can’t compare 1.5″ styrofoam walls that have a thin layer of gelcoat and wallpaper board to a residential house wall that’s made of 3.5″ fiberglass insulation covered with a half-inch of drywall, half-inch of plywood, Tyvek and exterior siding.īesides the skimpy walls, we find that the RV windows are the biggest reasons for the poor insulation. Of course, “lows in the 20’s” is far from “extreme” for North Americans living in houses with central heating, but it definitely feels extreme when living in an RV off the grid. So, we seem to have gotten it right this time. We have tried different strategies in very cold weather at very high altitudes like this in the past, and this most recent cold spell was our most comfortable, despite the wet gloppy mess of snowy covered jackets, hats, mittens and boots and the sullen gray skies that persisted for several days. While he’s busy getting that snowman together, I wanted to share with you the strategies we’ve used for heating our RV without electrical hookups, because we use different heating appliances in different situations.įor “cool” conditions, like December and February in the Arizona desert or May in the Canadian Rockies, when lows are in the 30’s, keeping our buggy warm is a cinch with our blue flame vent-free propane heater that Mark installed back in 2008.īut in in “extreme” conditions, like this recent snowstorm on a mountaintop in Colorado, we use a different strategy and rely more on our RV furnace that was factory installed in our trailer. ![]() ![]() ![]() The allies will be drawn together by a common purpose to take back the world from the darkness.īearers of the Black Staff is the first book in the Shannara sub-series, Legends of Shannara. Now let’s get to placing these QBs on the draft board. That’s why you won’t notice much difference between the QB placement in the DWR for a superflex format vs. You should plan to start 2 QBs every week throughout the year, and then fill in that flex spot with another position only if you need to. So the expected points between them isn’t even close. When you’re filling that flex spot, you’re generally pitting that 2nd QB against RB25+ or WR25+ or 37+ (depending on whether you start 2 or 3 WRs). In our default PPR scoring last year, 31 QBs averaged 16+ points per game, compared with 10 RBs, 13 WRs and 2 TEs. It’s the highest-scoring position in nearly any format. Why? Because even though you don’t need to start a 2nd QB in a superflex lineup, you’re gonna want to. It’s also all from tournaments, which can mean variations in roster building. This is meaningful ADP, because it’s all from money drafts. We see 6 more in Round 2, and then things start to spread out a bit. That’s 9 QBs inside of Round 1 for the 12-team draft format. ( New to Underdog? Get a 100% match on your 1st deposit with promo code “SHARKS.”) Let’s take a look at the QBs in Underdog superflex ADP … That changed with more superflex tournaments this year. It’s long been difficult to get worthwhile ADP for this format because it simply doesn’t get played to nearly the scale of 1-QB formats. And that can present opportunity if you play it right. And they should certainly go much earlier than in 1-QB formats.īut many drafters overreact to that rule difference. The whole purpose of both of these formats is to increase the scarcity of QBs and get the position’s value closer to its real-football value. ![]() I’m not surprised that your league tends to be more QB hungry than the DWR says you should be.
